Does Lightning Go Up or Down?

Question: Does lightning go up or down?

Answer: Both.

Like lots of science and nature, this question doesn’t really have a simple answer. Well, the answer “Both” might seem simple enough, but it could be confusing too.

Lightning starts as electrically charged air moving from the sky toward the ground, but we can’t see that. When that charged air gets close enough to the ground, electricity from the ground moves toward the sky, and that makes the strike that we can see. So lightning starts by going down and then up. It does both.
